Yes, I broke down and started the 13th Photo Gallery! Consider it a Baker's Dozen!
The cutest thing I heard a fan say recently (well, I haven't been conducting a poll for cuteness, either!) was that "Joan
was the type of woman that loved being around other people and was petrified of being alone. She wasn't a picky lady; she
just wanted to hear a heartbeat. What's wrong with that?" This cracked me up. Suits me just fine -- I say.
Heart to heart is fine with me! Joan, ya got mine! Speaking of hearts, I read elsewhere that when Joan acted,
her entire heart was in her face. She certainly did give heart, body and soul to everything she did -- and color-coordinated
while she was at it. How many people have coat linings that match the
fabric of their couch, as Joan does in one of the photos below? Only a sourpuss couldn't love Joan who, on top of everything
else, was one of the last great eccentrics!! Adela Rogers St. John, Hollywood writer, surmised young Joan as having
"winged feet and hidden fire . . .[and] an air of pride." Four Fabulous Faces notes that this zippy, impudent
youth evolved into a "thoroughbred face of authority and dignity, still dramatic but under the control of her precise purpose
and will." "Pastel prettiness has never appealed to me, only vital beauty," Crawford once said. Enjoy 50 more
photos of the vital thoroughbred who didn't "vant to be alone!" - D. Nowak

Joan at age eleven in new Chandler bio |
According to Lawrence Quirk, Joan's stepfather
Henry Cassin was molesting her at age eleven, the age she was in this photo above, which Crawford confessed to him in her
later life, claiming, "It wasn't incest. We weren't even related. He was gentle and kind and I led him to
it." If true -- and as I said in my Lawrence Quirk bio book review, given his thirty-year association with Crawford, why would he make this up?
-- it makes me wonder, "Was there no end to the suffering in her childhood?" Also note facial resemblance in child
Joan to "Torch Song" Joan below.
